Introduction

Welcome to the Webpage for CSIRO/AMIRA's P223 code suite.

The suite was developed at CSIRO over 25 years with industry support through various AMIRA consortia.  At the end of the final project (P223F), sponsors agreed that the code should be released into the public domain.

Practical three-dimensional electromagnetic inversion for exploration

CSIRO has conducted mathematical and algorithm research to develop practical geophysical software tools for the minerals exploration industry. The project, called P223F, created a suite of software for airborne and ground electromagnetic (EM) systems (time or frequency domain) that enables users to model and invert for:

  • Layered earth models and hosts.
  • Individual plates and more complex undulating structures that can be composed from plates.
  • Arbitrary structures, including topography, within a limited three-dimensional (3D) domain.

P223F, or Practical Three-Dimensional (3D) Inversion for Exploration, was the ninth project for AMIRA International, an industry association which manages collaborative research for members of the global minerals industry.

Project goals

The aims of this project were to:

  • deliver a suite of well-documented, robust modelling and inversion programs in the form of ANSI standard FORTRAN 95 source code and as Windows compiled executables
  • produce graphical user interfaces for the modelling and inversion processes
  • work with sponsors to help them get the most out of the inversion and forward modelling software
  • conduct workshops at sponsors’ meetings, specific on-site workshops tailored to individual sponsor priorities, and internet communication and software delivery
  • provide maintenance and feature augmentation of existing programs as required.

Background to the project

The project extended upon work developed over more than 25 years and included the following modelling and inversion software:

  • Airbeo: Layered earth inversion for airborne EM
  • Grendl: Layered earth inversion for ground EM and joint inversion of ground EM and resistivity
  • Leroi and LeroiAir: Thin sheet integral equations for 3D plates with any orientation embedded in layered earth hosts
  • Arjuna and ArjunAir: 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) finite elements for models where the geoelectric section varies slowly with respect to strike
  • Samaya and SamAir: Compact finite elements for limited 3D domains in a layered earth host, including topography and high contrast unconformities
  • Loki and LokiAir: Edge element finite elements for 3D full domains, including topography and high contrast (1:1 000 000) unconformities
  • Marco and MarcoAir: Volume integral equations with pulse basis functions for 3D prisms embedded in a layered earth host; automated group symmetry reductions for faster operation; suitable to conductivity contrasts of 1:300.
